Penguins Thump Rangers, 5-2

The Rangers took a 2-0 lead in the 1st period Monday night at The Garden, but the Penguins’ offense scored five unanswered goals to beat the Blueshirts, 5-2.

Brendan Lemieux and Vinni Lettieri got the Rangers on the board early; Lemieux with his 12th goal of the season at 8:25, and Lettieri with his 1st of the season, a power play snapshot, at 15:15.

But Pittsburgh took momentum right back, as Nick Bjugstad scored 26 seconds later to make it 2-1, and that’s where they stood at the end of 20 minutes.

The 2nd period was all Pittsburgh, as the Penguins scored three times to take a 4-2 lead. Justin Schultz, Matt Cullen, and Teddy Blueger got the goals.

Blueger scored at the 7:38 mark of the 3rd period to make it 5-2 Pittsburgh. It was Blueger’s first career two-goal game.

Matt Murray made 33 saves for the win. Alexandar Georgiev stopped 31 of 36 shots.

The Rangers [now 29-33-13, 71 pts] play the Bruins Wednesday night in Boston.
